FORECLOSURE MEDIATION The Maryland Foreclosure Mediation Act, passed by the Maryland General Assembly in the Spring 2010 session, took effect on July 1, 2010 and provides homeowners with a new tool to address their mortgage concerns through mediation with a neutral third party. It is anticipated that thousands of homeowners will take advantage of this tool and may need legal representation in mediation sessions that could include their lenders’ attorney. Free training will be provided to attorneys volunteering to provide pro bono assistance to Maryland homeowners. Attorneys will leave the training with in-depth knowledge of the new law and practical strategies for helping homeowners. Pro bono attorneys will receive malpractice insurance and mentoring support. The current training is for existing Foreclosure Prevention Pro Bono Project volunteers only. If you are not an existing Foreclosure Project volunteer and are interested in participating, training will soon be offered that encompasses the foreclosure mediation law as well as the Maryland foreclosure process and foreclosure defense strategies. If you would like to be notified of this training, please send an email to jlarrabee@probonomd.org. The Foreclosure Mediation Training is now available in webcast format and can be viewed on-line at a time and place convenient for you. To register for the webcast and select your volunteer preference, please complete the registration form and return to Pro Bono Resource Center by email, fax or regular mail.
