What is the PBRC Academy?

The Professional Skills Academy is a one-year, cohort-based program designed to support newer lawyers or those returning to legal practice (Fellows).

Mentors play a central role in the Academy by sharing their experience, modeling professionalism, and helping Fellows build strong, sustainable lawyering habits. Through the Academy, mentors help:

  • strengthen Fellows’ practical lawyering and professional skills;
  • foster a thoughtful, lifelong commitment to pro bono service; and
  • expand Fellows’ professional networks and sense of belonging within the legal community.

Mentors are matched with a Fellow for the year and commit to meeting at least four times, including one substantive interaction such as attending an Academy service clinic together or inviting the Fellow to shadow them at a hearing, bar event, or other meaningful professional activity. Mentors also participate in key Academy events throughout the year, supporting Fellows at meaningful milestones in their development.

Who Should Apply to Be a Mentor?

The Academy seeks experienced Maryland attorneys who are committed to professionalism, mentorship, and access to justice, and who are interested in supporting the growth of newer and returning members of the bar. Attorneys admitted and in good standing with the Maryland Bar are eligible to apply, and lawyers in private practice are especially encouraged to consider this rewarding mentoring opportunity.
