Rafael Espina is a Brooklyn-born leader, advocate, and former New York City Council Member whose career has been defined by a deep commitment to equity, sustainability, and community empowerment. Raised in Cypress Hills by union parents who immigrated from the Dominican Republic, Rafael has spent over a decade championing the needs of working-class and marginalized communities.

He served in the New York State Assembly and later represented District 37 on the New York City Council, where he led the city's most comprehensive neighborhood investment plan, driving progress in affordable housing, job creation, and infrastructure. A passionate voice for inclusive urban development, Rafael is also known for his advocacy around climate policy and access to creative spaces in gentrifying neighborhoods.

Named “New Yorker of the Year” by Time Out New York and recognized by The New York Times as a political standout, Rafael continues to inspire with his vision for a more just and inclusive city.

Rafael Espinal currently serves as the President and Executive Director of the Freelancers Union, where he leads national efforts to advocate for the rights and protections of independent workers. He is not pursuing any elected office at this time.
