The Maryland Pro Bono Portal is the quickest and easiest place to browse and sign up for your next pro bono opportunity. The portal enables you to search and choose cases or other volunteer opportunities based on your preferences, including type of service, practice area, time commitment, county, and more.

The Maryland Pro Bono Portal offers pro bono volunteer opportunities in a wide range of areas such as consumer protection, immigration, eviction prevention, family law, expungement, estate planning and more. Opportunities range from full representation cases to brief advice, community and courthouse clinics, hotline shifts, interpretation and others — all through the portal.

When registering for an account as a volunteer, you will simply need to provide your name, address, email, phone number, professional experience, and, optionally, your state bar number. During registration, you will have the opportunity to connect and express interest in any of the participating Maryland legal services organizations. It is also fine to skip this step during registration because you will always have the chance to view them again after registering.

You are free to browse all the opportunities on the portal with no commitment. There are a wide variety of pro bono opportunities listed on the portal, including short-term pro bono opportunities, such as legal clinics, where only a few hours of your time are needed to provide legal advice versus handling an entire case. Different opportunities may have varying commitments attached to them depending on the organization that lists them and the type of volunteer opportunity.

No. You do not have to be an attorney to sign up for an account, nor is a Maryland bar license required to view opportunities on the Maryland Pro Bono Portal. There are opportunities available for paralegals, law students, and other types of advocates.

If there is a pro bono opportunity you are interested in that requires specific training, the portal will notify you and link you directly to the training required to volunteer.

The Maryland Pro Bono Portal hosts multiple trainings from various organizations, covering 45+ legal areas of expertise. These trainings will be available for you to sign up for on the portal. In-person and online training opportunities will be available, with the training on demand for you to watch where you want and on your own time.

When signing up for a training, you may see that a volunteer commitment is required to view the training. An example of a volunteer commitment could be to take on a certain number of cases or attend a certain number of clinics. Should you complete any such trainings, your portal dashboard will help you keep track of your commitments.

Yes. Organizations, even those you currently or have previously volunteered with, that list their opportunities on the portal will require you to make an account and get a one-time, organizational approval before signing up for any of their portal-listed opportunities.

Response times will vary by organization and opportunity. Many organizations will reach out after reviewing your registration, but the timing can depend on factors such as staffing, case needs, and volunteer demand. If you have not heard back, you are welcome to contact the organization directly using the information provided in the opportunity listing.
