Know Your (Their) Rights when Interacting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Room 347:  11:15 AM to 12:30 PM

With increased ICE enforcement across Maryland and nationally, it is important for advocates to know what rights immigrants have when interacting with ICE. Attendees at this panel will learn about what the right to remain silent and related rights actually mean for the immigrants themselves and those trying to support the immigrant community. Attendees will be introduced to the various legal mechanisms that exist for people to request their release from detention. They will leave with concrete tips for handling these interactions and with resources about what to do and who to call if they are made aware of someone who has become detained by ICE. Attendees will also leave with a curated toolkit of resources they can use to start supporting immigrants now, before their emergency takes place and be prepared with numbers to call if someone they are assisting becomes detained by immigration authorities.

Panelists:

  1. Jonathan (Jon) Kaplan, Conservation X Labs
  2. Suleyka Canelo, Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland

Moderator: Neha Lall, University of Baltimore School of Law Clinical Program
