What's in a Name? Unraveling Identification Issues to Reduce Employment and Housing Barriers

Many legal services clients find themselves with identification that is incorrect, out of date, or inconsistent between legal documents. These ID issues can quickly become barriers for employment, housing or other needs like medical care. At the same time, the "fix" can often be difficult for an individual to resolve on their own. Addressing inconsistencies between Division of Vital Records, the Motor Vehicle Administration and other agencies can be impossible for our clients to unravel. With the enactment of the REAL ID, low-income individuals are facing additional hurdles to maintaining their identification. Panelists will provide practical tips on how to address identification barriers with the various agencies involved, and when and how to file a name change request with the court. Specific topics will include how to resolve REAL ID documentation issues, how to work with the Division of Vital Records and the Court, and immigration identification issues.
