During this 1.5 hour webinar, experienced practitioner Craig Enck will instruct volunteer attorneys on drafting life estate deeds as part of an estate plan and share practice tips on deed recordation in Baltimore City.This service will allow seniors to age in place with the security that their family members will easily be able to remain in their homes after the senior passes away. This training is free to attorneys who agree to the pro bono commitment of preparing one life estate deed through a pro bono provider.

What happens to a child if their parents are deported? Making a Family Safety Plan

A Family Safety Plan outlines what parents want to happen to their children if they have an emergency that prevents them from taking care of them. This panel covers important documents that parents in Maryland can complete as a part of their plan with a focus on Maryland's Standby Guardianship law, why it was necessary, how it works, and how families can use it as a part of their comprehensive plan. Attendees will learn how to explain family safety planning to immigrant families, to begin the process with parents before they meet with an attorney, and to identify low or no-cost resources to assist parents with making the plan.

Impact on Mental Health in Seeking Veterans Legal Services

This panel will discuss the intersection of mental health and legal services. It will identify the issues that affect many of the less fortunate and underserved in our society especially the ones experiencing homelessness and military veterans and their families that causes mental health conditions. It will focus on various mental health conditions including PTSD due to combat or military sexual trauma, traumatic brain injury, and co- occurring substance abuse. The panel will discuss available resources and the role of problem solving courts, such as Veterans Treatment courts, in connecting individuals suffering from mental health conditions to legal services.

Litigation Skills Series – Practical protections for remote clients: Coercion, Confidentiality and Capacity

Through our utility bill clinics, PBRC and our partner Maryland Volunteer Lawyer Service advocate for low-income residents with utility bill issues, helping to stabilize their finances and preserve home ownership. With temperatures dropping and homeowners and tenants facing energy bill shutoffs, learn about some of the issues our clients face in our utility bill clinics and ways that our community partners try to prevent these shutoffs by helping them apply for financial assistance and other benefits to supplement their income. Volunteering in Rent Court: Baltimore City and Baltimore County

Lawyers will learn how to represent tenants in rent court in both Baltimore City and Baltimore County, gaining the skills necessary to help stem the tide of evictions that is becoming an epidemic due in part to COVID-19 and the recent removal of tenant protections. With this training, lawyers will be qualified to participate in TVLD clinics, representing tenants in Failure to Pay Rent Actions, advising them about available defenses and helping to ensure that they stay housed.

Litigation Skills Series: Tips for Negotiating with Creditors in District Court

Each meeting runs from noon to 3 pm on a Friday, and includes three components: a 50-minute skills training; a 50-minute exercise; and a 50-minute mentoring roundtable, where attendees can bring up litigation questions they’re currently facing (whether related to the presentation topic or not), and get input from the group.
