–Experienced litigators, who want to learn more about affidavit judgment and failure to pay rent cases, and
–Newer attorneys who want a comprehensive introduction to Maryland’s District Courts.
Topics Covered:
–History, jurisdiction, and overview of Maryland’s District Courts;
–Practical information about attorney codes, court forms, clerk’s offices, and online resources;
–“Walk through a case” – a brief review of Title 3 of the Maryland Rules, with deeper dives into key issues;
–Lunchtime panel with District Court Judges – Judicial perspective and open Q & A;
–Consumer law application: Proceeding in affidavit judgment cases;
–Landlord-tenant law application: Proceeding in FTPR (failure to pay rent) and rent escrow cases; and
–Next steps for pro bono service in Maryland’s District Courts.
In exchange for this FREE training, attendees must volunteer at three (3) consumer protection clinics through the Consumer Protection Project (CPP) or three (3) rent court clinics through the Tenant Volunteer Lawyer of the Day (TVLD) Program within 1 year of training. Case support, access to a mentor, and malpractice insurance provided.
