Handling Tax Sale Cases: Practice Tips & Perspectives from the Magistrate’s Office

Volunteer attorneys will hear practice tips from a panel of experts and a fellow pro bono volunteer on handling tax sale foreclosure defense cases, and the Magistrate’s Office will offer their perspective on these cases. This training, offered as part of PBRC's Home Preservation Project, is free to attorneys who agree to attend one Baltimore City tax sale prevention clinic and handle one pro bono case within one year of training. (Note: attorneys who are new to tax sale prevention and need access to the basic training webcast can do so, free of additional pro bono commitments.)

Representing Asylum-Seekers: Model Hearing Edition

The AM session will cover how to represent children and families applying for asylum while in removal proceedings (including asylum law, special protections for children, filling out the application, and appearing in court). The PM session will include a presentation from the Court and a series of model hearings with Assistant Chief Immigration Judge Jack Weil. Pro bono attorneys (licensed to practice and in good standing in at least one state) must agree to accept at least one asylum pro bono case from a Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project (MILAP) Partner within one year of training (note, depending upon the process that applies to the pro bono case, volunteer attorneys will need to either attend an interview and/or hearing in either the Arlington Asylum Office and/or the Baltimore Immigration Court).

Advising New Nonprofits & Community Organizations in Maryland

This training is designed for attorneys, law students, and recent law school grads, with little or no experience, to learn the process of applying for 501(c)(3) tax exemption. The training includes materials and instruction on how to work with small, volunteer-run nonprofit clients, drafting and advising on bylaws and conflict of interest policies for small nonprofits, incorporation as a nonstock corporation, applying for recognition of 501(c)(3) tax exempt status and updates to the IRS Form 1023 and 1023-EZ, and advising nonprofits on ongoing legal compliance.  Participants must agree to accept 1 pro bono nonprofit case from Community Law Center (CLC) within 1 year of training.

Drafting Life Estate Deeds for Baltimore Seniors

During this 1.5 hour webinar, experienced practitioner Craig Enck will instruct volunteer attorneys on drafting life estate deeds as part of an estate plan and share practice tips on deed recordation in Baltimore City.This service will allow seniors to age in place with the security that their family members will easily be able to remain in their homes after the senior passes away. This training is free to attorneys who agree to the pro bono commitment of preparing one life estate deed through a pro bono provider.

Litigation Skills Lunch & Learn: Tips for the trial lawyer considering an appeal (Successfully noting an appeal for the trial court)

Each meeting includes a one-hour skills training, followed by a one-hour mentoring roundtable, where attendees can bring up litigation questions they’re currently facing (whether related to the presentation topic or not), and get input from the group. Experienced litigators will be present during the second hour, and a light lunch will be provided. Participation is open to attorneys who have already accepted a pro bono commitment through a PBRC training within the past 12 months OR who commit to answer at least three legal questions for low-income Marylanders, using the https://Maryland.FreeLegalAnswers.org website. (Instructions will be provided.)
