Impact Speaker Series: Unaccompanied Children

April 26, 2021 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

The Impact Speaker Series is a monthly 1-hour virtual lunch discussion with community organization members, volunteers, and PBRC's project staff to discuss current events/issues and the importance of clinic projects. Each live event is recorded and available for continued viewing. This series is free to all advocates and community members.

Topic: Unaccompanied Children

Thousands of unaccompanied children and families have come to Maryland - seeking refuge from violence in their home countries. Unaccompanied children are nearly five times more likely to win their immigration cases when they are represented by a lawyer. Families fleeing violence are 14 times more likely to win. The Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project (MILAP) uses volunteer attorneys and interpreters to help these children and families gain access to critical legal assistance with their valid claims to remain in the United States. Join MILAP as we discuss the hardships unaccompanied children face and what we can do to help them.

Advocates and community members are welcome to join the discussion.

Speakers:

  • Cate Scenna, Director of the Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project, Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland
  • Helena Guerra, Program Coordinator, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington
  • Sarah Choi, Senior Attorney and Pro Bono Coordinator, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND)
