Panelist, Grassroots Justice: Community Justice Workers Building Access from the Ground Up

Marie D. Fouché is a Haitian mother, human rights advocate, and dedicated physician with a strong focus on global public health. She earned her Medical Doctor degree from the University Quisqueya School of Medicine in Haiti, where she also served as Assistant Dean, Academic Advisor, and Associate Researcher. Specializing in infectious diseases, she trained at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire d’Amiens in France and earned a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on Environmental and Global Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago, supported by a Fulbright Scholar award. She also holds a certification as an Occupational Health Specialist.

With 19 years of experience, Dr. Fouché has worked in global public health across the United States and internationally, particularly focusing on underserved populations. Her research includes infectious and chronic diseases, community engagement, and empowerment. She is a passionate advocate for Community Health Workers and their crucial role in achieving equitable healthcare.

Dr. Fouché believes that the lack of access to justice is the root cause of health disparities and advocates for systemic change to ensure marginalized communities gain the legal protections and rights needed to improve health outcomes.

As a former senior trainer for high school debates at FOKAL (Haiti's branch of the Open Society Foundation), Dr. Fouché encourages youth to engage in productive debates, which she believes empowers them to create strategies for addressing global challenges.

Outside of her professional life, Marie D. is an avid lover of music, especially jazz, and enjoys gardening and embroidery.
