Moderator, Resolving Student Loan Debt Inside and Outside of Bankruptcy
William Steinwedel is the Deputy Advocacy Director for Homeownership Preservation with the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau, Foreclosure Legal Assistance Project. His current practice focuses on representing clients in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy and foreclosure mediations in order to help people save their homes. He also represents clients in expungements and assists in Legal Aid outreach programs, such as Lawyer in the Library. Prior to going to work at Maryland Legal Aid in December 2014, he worked for 2 ½ years as an associate at Melehy and Associates LLC, which is a general practice firm in which he practiced primarily bankruptcy, family and employment law. Prior to that, he spent about a year and a half as an associate at Bender and Radcliffe, P.A., a medical collections firm. He was a 2007 graduate of Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and a 2010 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center. Mr. Steinwedel has also been an Enrolled Agent with the IRS since January 2017, and volunteers with Baltimore CASH during tax season, preparing tax returns for low-income communities. He is a past president of the Consumer Bankruptcy Section of the Maryland State Bar Association and a past winner of the Alan J. Belsky Award for contributions to the section. He also is currently the co-chair of the Ocean City Committee for the Consumer Bankruptcy Section and will be the moderator at their program this year.
