Maryland Rules related to pro bono practice while on inactive/retired status:

Maryland attorneys who are on inactive/retired status may engage in pro bono through certain programs. PBRC encourages you to review Maryland Rule 1-312(a)(3) and Maryland Rule 19-605(b)(2). In summary:

  • Attorneys on this status must provide their pro bono service through a legal services or pro bono legal program sponsored or supported by a local Bar Association (as defined by Rule 19-601(b)), the Maryland State Bar Association, an affiliated bar foundation, or the Maryland Legal Services Corporation. Maryland Rule 19-605(b)(2)
  • They must include on pleadings or papers the address and telephone number of the legal services or pro bono public program in which the attorney is practicing, or the attorney’s primary residence, which must be in the United States. Maryland Rule 1-312(a)(3)
