Volunteer attorneys can provide critical legal help to Maryland consumers by participating in courthouse clinics on the first, second, and third Fridays of the month in Upper Marlboro. At the Consumer Protection Project (CPP)'s courthouse clinics, attorneys will provide advice and limited scope representation to consumer defendants, negotiate payment plans and dismissals, and help consumers file notices of intention to defend. Volunteers may also accept cases from either clinic for full representation.

The training, co-sponsored by Community Legal Services of Prince George’s County (CLS), will cover Landlord-Tenant rules, cases, and practical advice, preparing attorneys to represent tenants in Failure to Pay Rent cases. Attendees must agree to fulfill two (2) units of volunteering within one year of training. One “unit of volunteering” is EITHER participating at one (1) CLS Rent Court Clinic OR taking one (1) landlord-tenant case from CLS.

Drafting Motions to Reopen Immigration Court Proceedings

Attendees of this Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project (MILAP) training will leave with the ability to draft a motion to reopen at immigration court proceedings with a focus on reopening cases for asylum seekers. This training is a great fit for attorneys with strong legal writing and drafting skills who want to assist immigrants in removal proceedings. Participating attorneys must agree to write at least one motion to reopen within 1 year of training.

Volunteer attorneys are needed to execute estate plans at an Estate Planning Clinic on Tuesday, November 13, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, at GEDCO (Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation) in Baltimore. Attorneys will meet one-on-one with Baltimore City seniors at the day long clinic and prepare wills, advance medical directives and financial powers of attorney.  Attorneys with less than 2 years estate planning experience must complete an online training course prior to volunteering.
