Each year the Maryland Partners for Justice Conference presents a unique opportunity for legal services program staff, the public and private bar, members of the judiciary, human services agencies, elected officials, and others to discuss critical issues facing the poor and underrepresented in our state.  With an expected number of almost 300 attendees, the structure of the day includes a variety of panel discussions related to the delivery of legal services to the poor and disenfranchised, a morning plenary, and a luncheon keynote address by powerful guest speakers with a passion for justice.

Representing Asylum-Seekers: Model Hearing Edition

The AM session will cover how to represent children and families applying for asylum while in removal proceedings (including asylum law, special protections for children, filling out the application, and appearing in court). The PM session will include a presentation from the Court and a series of model hearings with Assistant Chief Immigration Judge David M. Jones. Open to pro bono attorneys as well as non-attorneys who are willing to act in the Model Hearing.

Veterans Benefits: Developing Personal and Witness Statements

The training covers how to work with veterans in developing personal statements and witness statements to submit with their veterans disability compensation claims and discharge upgrade petitions.

Impact on Mental Health in Seeking Veterans Legal Services

This panel will discuss the intersection of mental health and legal services. It will identify the issues that affect many of the less fortunate and underserved in our society especially the ones experiencing homelessness and military veterans and their families that causes mental health conditions. It will focus on various mental health conditions including PTSD due to combat or military sexual trauma, traumatic brain injury, and co- occurring substance abuse. The panel will discuss available resources and the role of problem solving courts, such as Veterans Treatment courts, in connecting individuals suffering from mental health conditions to legal services.

Through our utility bill clinics, PBRC and our partner Maryland Volunteer Lawyer Service advocate for low-income residents with utility bill issues, helping to stabilize their finances and preserve home ownership. With temperatures dropping and homeowners and tenants facing energy bill shutoffs, learn about some of the issues our clients face in our utility bill clinics and ways that our community partners try to prevent these shutoffs by helping them apply for financial assistance and other benefits to supplement their income.
