Tools and Best Practices for Effective Storytelling & Communications

Lawyers are storytellers. Whether in court, in the legislature or before a funder, telling stories is part of our bread and butter. Yet, most lay people and decision-makers in Maryland do not know what access to justice or civil legal aid means and why it matters. This tells us that our community needs to do a better job of telling our stories and raising public awareness about why the work we do matters. We will be joined by national and state-focused communications experts who will share practical tips and tools that can be used to enhance our access to justice community's capacity to use effective storytelling to advance a myriad of organizational goals, including advocacy, fundraising and public awareness.

  • storytelling best-practices;
  • key access to justice messages;
  • toolkits and templates related to public awareness campaigns related to civil justice;
  • how to tell your clients' stories to advance policy advocacy;
  • ethical issues related to telling client stories;

  • how to become part of Maryland's effort to increase civil justice for all communications via Maryland Access to Justice Commission's new project entitled Maryland Voices for Justice.
